Guitar Chords Chart

I know how frustrating it can be to find a guitar chords chart, so I'm in the process on composing one right here for you.

I'll be covering the major, minor and seventh chords first, and then I'll be adding charts for more advance chords. But before we get into that, let's discuss how chords are formed.

Chord Formations

What exactly is a chord anyway? Well all basic major and minor chords are made up of groups of three notes called triands. These triads come from scales known as diatonic scales. The word diatonic just describes scales found in western music.

If you think of it this way, the C-Diatonic scale looks like this:

E---------------------------
B---------------------0--1---
G---------------0--2--------
D------0--2--3--------------
A----3----------------------
E---------------------------

The first note is a C and the last C note is one octave apart.

C--D--E--F--G--A--B--C ... OK, that's pretty simple. By skipping every 2nd note in a diatonic scale, you can see which notes form the basis of the chord. The C-Chord for example is formed from the C, E, and G notes. But how do you know which 3 chords work together in a song?

For that you must apply the old Roman Numeral I - IV - V which is position 1, position 4 and position 5 along the scale. So if we were starting a song in C major, the C=I, IV=F and the V=G.
Therefore the three major chords are C-F and G.

What if you were starting in D? ... yep, D, G and A would be the three chords. I'll cover more of this in greater detail over the next few weeks and months.
